Treadmill Running Tips for the Winter Weather Warriors

Treadmill Running Tips for the Winter Weather Warriors

With this weekend’s Arctic blast set to hit Colorado and run club canceled, we’re here to help you stay on track with your training—indoors. Running on a treadmill might not be your first choice, but with the right mindset and tips, it can be a great way to get your miles in. We tapped our team for their best treadmill running strategies to keep you motivated and moving.

Caitlin’s Tips:

  • Stack Your Minutes: Use Peloton classes to build your treadmill workout. Stack classes to include a warm-up, your main run, and a cool-down. This approach keeps things structured and engaging
  • Entertainment is Key: Create a treadmill-only playlist or pick a show to watch exclusively during your runs. Having something to look forward to can make all the difference.
  • Go by Feel: Sometimes, covering the treadmill screen with a towel helps you focus on how your body feels instead of fixating on numbers. Just run by feel and enjoy the movement.

Lindsley’s Tips:

  • Peloton for the Win: Like Caitlin, I swear by Peloton’s specialized run classes. They make it easy to tailor a workout to your needs.
  • Audiobook Escape: If you’re not in the mood for an instructor, an audiobook can help you zone out and make the time fly by.
  • Fuel the Fun: Keep your favorite snacks and beverages within reach. Treat your treadmill session like a mini adventure.
  • Gratitude Reset: When it gets tough, I remind myself how lucky I am to have the ability to run on a treadmill. I don’t have to run; I get to run.

Chelsea’s Tips:

  • Mix It Up: Combine entertainment with guided workouts. Start with a show or movie, then follow it up with a Peloton run if you’re tackling a long run and need variety.
  • Snacks and Sips: Keep the best snacks and drinks within arm’s reach. It’s the little comforts that make treadmill runs more enjoyable.
  • Walk it Out: Don’t hesitate to incorporate walking breaks. They’re great for resetting mentally and physically.
  • Warmth Wins: Honestly, I don’t mind the treadmill because it’s warm. Running indoors is a win when you’re avoiding freezing temps!

Alex's Tips:

  • Listen to everything Caitlin, Lindsley and Chelsea said because I am trying to enjoy running on the treadmill inside and this weekend, I will be forced to do this. I'll jump back in next week with a few tips on running outside in the winter because that is something I can share about.

Bonus Tips:

1. Set a Goal: Having a specific distance or time in mind can help keep you motivated.

2. Dress for Success: Wear breathable, moisture-wicking clothing to stay comfortable indoors.

3. Focus on Form: The treadmill is a great place to concentrate on your running posture and stride.
